Of course the Piedmont has a lot more to offer next to wining and dining. Cities like Turin, Asti and Albi offer loads of history, culture and tradition. With its beautiful historic centre, its many museums, palaces and churches, Turin is really worth a visit. Especially since it was fully renovated for the Olympic Wintergames of 2004. Travelling through the region you will see many old villages and towns, often with beautiful churches. In addition the region offers great golf courses, nicely situated in the hills, and a ample opportunities for hiking trips and active cycling. The Piedmont is the birthplace of the slowfood organization (www.slowfood.com) which by now is a worldwide active organization promoting the preservation of culinary traditions and ingredients. The fact that this movement was started in the Piedmont is not surprising given its rich culinary history. The Piedmontese kitchen and wines are world-famous, not to forget the great truffles. Red wines like Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo are famous all over the world. However, nowadays Piedmont also produces good white wines, Moscate d\u2019Asti being the most famous. All this has resulted in an enormous amount of great restaurants with a very good price\/quality balance, where you won\u2019t find many tourists but you can join the local Italians. According to many, the Piedmont has among the best wines in the world. The top wine is the Barolo from the region of the village with the same name. Other famous red wines are the Barbaresco and wines made from the Nebbiolo or Barbera grapes. Tradition says the Nebbiolo can only be harvested after the first gaze in fall. The Barbera often carries the name of the local region and often ripes quickly where other grapes need more time. In good year a Barbera Superiore is produced. Good white wines are the Roero Arneis, Piemonte Chardonnay and the Gavi wines. And of course the sparkling white wines Spumante and Moscato d\u2019Asti. Finally many good grappas are produced as well.<\/p>\n
