In the Piedmont you can still call at a winery and ask the farmer if you can taste the wine or visit a cantina in one of the villages. In addition there are of course many enotecas where you can taste and buy wine. All this in a relaxed atmosphere sharing the same passion: wine. Most times you don’t have to pay for a tasting

Since several generation (1826) the family Scaglione produces top wines in the hills between Acqui and Canelli. Their red wines (Barbera d’Asti en Monferrato) and Moscato are delicious. The DOC Loazzola dessert wines is great experience.

Grappa producer Berta in Mombaruzzo and Nizza. Great Grappa’s and museum at the distillery in Mombaruzzo. Also one can do a grappa tasting and buy some of their excellent grappa’s (our favorites) in various price ranges. Sometimes they look closed but ring the doorbell and they will open for you and make you feel welcome.

Beautiful family business near Nizza Monferrato with a lot of history and a large country house where the family lives. Tour and tasting are excellent and wines ditto. Both very attractive and welcoming. Best to call for an appointment.
